Did you know 80% of employees are not engaged at work? (Gallup’s latest State of the Global Workplace Report, 2021). So how can we be actively engaged at work? Find Happiness at Work! Let us dive into the three contributors towards Happiness at work.

1. Jobs Satisfaction:

The first one is Job Satisfaction. According to Cynthia D. Fisher, it is a “pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting in an appraisal of one’s job or job experience.” The factors that can influence this are job characteristics which include salary, promotion, level of danger and schedule.

So how can leaders increase Job Satisfaction on their team?

  • Be realistic with your expectations by not overwhelming your team.
  • Recognize good work and celebrate the wins.
  • Priorities employees’ well-being by making time for 1-on-1s with each member of your team.
  • Offer opportunities for learning by providing learning resources and training programs.
  • Giving feedback often helps your team become more efficient and perform better.

2. Engagement

The second one is Engagement. It is a positive, fulfilling, work-related state of mind characterised by vigour, dedication, and absorption. Vigour is high levels of energy and mental resilience while working. Dedication is strong involvement in one’s work, and absorption is concentrated and happily engrossed towards work. The workers’ characteristics can influence this, which include gender, age, relationships, status, and level of education.

How to improve Engagement at work?

  • Improve efficiency in the workplace by making employees’ workloads more manageable.

  • Improve communication by preventing misunderstanding and conflict.

  • Give recognition and make your staff feel valued and increase their productivity.

  • Encourage interaction by building relationships outside of work.

  • Focus on Employee well-being by checking on employees and providing resources for their well-being.

3. Job Involvement

The third one is Job Involvement. It is engagement with one’s job, identifying with one’s work, and viewing the job as central to one’s identity and self-esteem. It is people who are committed, motivated and enthusiastic about work.

  • Work on yourself by learning new skills and adding more qualifications.

  • Build connections with people and involve yourself in discussions.

  • Take a break by reducing stress and re-energise.

  • Celebrate your successes. Develop your interest and enthusiasm in work.

  • Don’t consider the job a burden. You will feel more stressed and lose interest in work if you do.
