Do you know all about Emotional Intelligence?

Posted on Jun 01, 2023.

According to the World Economic Forum, Emotional Intelligence is one of the top 10 most in-demand skills and will continue to be so through at least 2025. From recognizing and understanding our own emotions to managing relationships with others, Emotional Intelligence is a crucial skill set for success in today's fast-paced world. With overwhelming stimulation and pressure to achieve, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives and neglect our emotional well-being.

THE 4 PILLARS OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

EI 1

Forbes defines emotional intelligence (EI) as "the skills and abilities that help you identify, understand, and manage your own emotions, and identify and empathize with the emotions of others." To better visualize this concept, let's take a closer look at the above image. Emotional intelligence includes four interconnected and mutually reinforcing pillars.

1. Self-awareness

Self-awareness is at the core of everything. It describes your ability to not only understand your strengths and weaknesses but to recognize your emotions and the effect they have on you and your team’s performance. It involves being in tune with one's own emotions, strengths, and limitations.

2. Self-management

Self-management refers to the ability to manage our emotions, control our impulses and adapt to changing situations. It involves self-care, self-control, self-motivation, and the ability to regulate one's own behavior.

3. Social awareness

Social awareness describes your ability to recognize others’ emotions and the dynamics in play within your organization. This involves being empathetic, reading body language, and understanding social cues.

4. Social management

Relationship management involves using our emotional intelligence skills to build and maintain positive relationships with others. This includes communicating effectively, resolving conflicts, and collaborating with others.

Where do you start? It starts with you. Since Emotional Intelligence is a skill, it can be learned with patience and practice. By observing and learning from your difficult emotions and uncomfortable feelings, you can become more emotionally aware and prevent yourself from becoming overwhelmed.
